🤖 Cultural AI & Language Preservation Initiative•Phase 1 In Progress

Dagadya (दगड्या)Building an AI That Speaks the Language of Our Mountains

A Buransh Tales initiative to preserve Garhwali language, folklore, traditions, and Himalayan knowledge through artificial intelligence.

“Every village has a story. Every generation carries wisdom. Every language holds a unique way of seeing the world. Yet much of our Himalayan heritage remains undocumented—scattered across family memories, oral traditions, and mountain conversations that may never be recorded. At Buransh Tales, we believe technology can help safeguard this living memory for future generations.”

What is Dagadya?

In the Pahadi language, the word Dagadya (दगड्या) means a companion — someone who walks alongside you on steep mountain trails, shares stories over chai, and helps you discover new horizons.

We envision Dagadya as far more than a conventional corporate chatbot. It is being designed as a culturally grounded digital companion for students, researchers, storytellers, travelers, and diaspora youth seeking to reconnect with their Himalayan roots.

🗣️

Understand Pahadi Languages

Exploring native modeling for Garhwali, Hindi, and English, with long-term architecture designed to expand to Kumaoni, Jaunsari, and neighboring mountain varieties.

📖

Share Local Stories & Lore

Help users discover authentic Himalayan folk tales, oral histories, ballads, and village traditions passed down through generations.

🏛️

Preserve Living Vocabulary

Support dialect preservation through vocabulary, expressions, idioms, proverbs (पखाणा), and regional variations documented in our Pahadi Shabdkosh.

🔗

Connect Living Knowledge

Guide visitors directly to verified research articles, sacred trail mappings, and ethnobotanical guides published across Buransh Tales.

🤝

Invite Community Curation

Empower native speakers, village elders, and cultural enthusiasts to contribute words and verify translations with consent and ethical attribution.

🛡️

Truthful & Anti-Hallucination

Designed to acknowledge uncertainty and admit when cultural information is missing rather than fabricating historical or folk claims.

Step-by-Step Evolution

Our Roadmap: From an Idea to a Cultural AI

Dagadya is being developed in open, methodical stages. Each phase helps us understand what is technically possible and what our mountain community needs most.

Phase 1In Progress 🟢
Focus: Active Research

Research and Foundation

🎯 Goal: Understand the language before building the model.

Exploring existing language resources, researching suitable AI architectures, and identifying the challenges of working with underrepresented languages such as Garhwali.

Key Activities & Milestones:

  • •Researching transformer architectures, small language models (SLMs), and open-source NLP toolkits.
  • •Identifying available Garhwali literature, folk transcripts, lexicons, and linguistic corpora.
  • •Formulating ethical guidelines for collecting, verifying, and attributing community-contributed materials.
  • •Establishing phonetic and dialectal mapping for regional variations across Garhwal and Uttarakhand.
Phase 2Upcoming 🟡
Focus: Knowledge Ingestion

Building the Himalayan Knowledge Collection

🎯 Goal: Bring scattered mountain knowledge into a structured digital archive.

A language model is only as useful as its underlying data and cultural accuracy. We are structuring a curated multi-modal collection of Himalayan oral and written traditions.

Key Activities & Milestones:

  • •Folk tales, legends, and village oral histories recorded directly from mountain elders.
  • •Local vocabulary, idioms, metaphors, and Garhwali proverbs (खाणा-पखाणा).
  • •Documentation of sacred rituals, temple traditions, agrarian calendars, and Himalayan festivals.
  • •Community-contributed oral narratives and published, verified Buransh Tales research archives.
Phase 3Planned ⚪
Focus: Core Architecture

Training a Small Language Model (SLM)

🎯 Goal: Experiment with training a lightweight, culturally focused model from scratch.

Rather than relying solely on giant generic models, we plan to experiment with a dedicated Small Language Model (SLM) trained to learn linguistic syntax and patterns specific to Himalayan languages.

Key Activities & Milestones:

  • •Custom Devanagari and regional tokenization tailored for Garhwali phonetic roots.
  • •Model pre-training experiments evaluating validation loss and sample coherence.
  • •Systematic benchmarks for grammar retention, vocabulary recognition, and text generation.
  • •Iterative evaluation to overcome the low-resource language challenge responsibly.
Phase 4Planned ⚪
Focus: Instruction Tuning

Teaching Dagadya to Converse

🎯 Goal: Move from raw text prediction towards nuanced, culturally respectful conversations.

Fine-tuning Dagadya with culturally grounded instruction pairs so it can explain complex dialect nuances, narrate folklore, and converse naturally in Garhwali, Hindi, and English.

Key Activities & Milestones:

  • •Curating conversational dialogue datasets reflecting everyday Pahadi warmth and respect.
  • •Native-speaker review loops checking dialect accuracy, tone, and respectful representations.
  • •Explaining cultural context behind mountain customs, medicinal herbs, and architectural traditions.
  • •Safety and sensitivity guardrails preventing misrepresentation of sacred folklore.
Phase 5Planned ⚪
Focus: Knowledge Retrieval

Connecting Dagadya to Buransh Tales (RAG)

🎯 Goal: Make verified cultural knowledge discoverable with strict factual grounding.

Integrating Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to connect Dagadya directly to the Buransh Tales living archive, linking every cultural answer to verified research articles and citations.

Key Activities & Milestones:

  • •Real-time semantic retrieval from Buransh Tales articles, recipes, flora guides, and lexicons.
  • •Transparent citation linking users back to the original authors, elders, and source articles.
  • •Self-acknowledgment of uncertainty: Dagadya admits when data is unavailable rather than hallucinating.
  • •Seamless synchronization with new research published by our editorial board.
Phase 6Planned ⚪
Focus: Community Testing

Community Testing and Continuous Learning

🎯 Goal: Build openly alongside the mountain people whose heritage we aim to preserve.

Opening Dagadya for community-wide beta testing with Garhwali speakers, village storytellers, historians, school students, and linguists across the Himalayan diaspora.

Key Activities & Milestones:

  • •Crowdsourced feedback flags for unnatural phrasing, spelling deviations, and regional gaps.
  • •Dialect expansion across Chamoli, Pauri, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, and Kumaoni nuances.
  • •Educational modules for diaspora youth seeking to learn their ancestral tongue.
  • •Public project logs documenting benchmarks, learnings, and community milestones.
Community Co-Creation

Help Us Build Dagadya

The future of a regional language AI cannot depend on algorithms alone. It requires people who know the language, remember the stories, and care deeply about preserving them.

🗣️

Garhwali Speakers & Elders

Share everyday phrases, local idioms, pronunciation nuances, village sayings (पखाणा), and dialect differences across valley communities.

✍️

Writers & Storytellers

Contribute original stories, oral histories, traditional songs, and folk legends to help Dagadya learn authentic mountain narratives.

📚

Researchers & Historians

Help verify historical details, ritual meanings, sacred traditions, and geographic accuracy to keep the AI truthful and respectful.

💻

Developers & AI Researchers

Collaborate on dataset formatting, tokenization, small language models, open-source evaluations, and conversational inference.

Our Commitment to Himalayan Heritage

We approach Dagadya with humility, transparency, and deep respect for the mountain communities whose knowledge makes this possible. Language is more than text: it carries memory, identity, humor, ancestral ties, and our relationship with the Himalayas.

Our ambition is not to release another fleeting chatbot. It is to pioneer how ethical artificial intelligence can safeguard endangered oral languages and empower Himalayan communities for generations to come.
